Shawn taught and promoted many different ethnic and theatrical styles of dance and, with St. Denis, choreographed the Denishawn company’s entire repertoire. Graham’s inspiration to dance was to express capacity of the human body and the American life and struggles of the individual. Graham embraced every artistic genre and collaborated with leading people in the visual arts industry, musicians, designers. Some of the leading designers included Noguchi, Hasten, Calvin kKein and Donna Karan Modern dance, the other major genre of Western theatre dance, developed in the early 20th century as a series of reactions against what detractors saw as the limited, artificial style of movement of ballet and its frivolous subject matter.
